It's not Nelson's column, it's my blog!
Perhaps I'm missing something, but I've been watching news reports on the 200th anniversary celebrations of Britain's vistory at the Battle of Trafalgar and throughout the coverage I've noticed that the overriding concern is whether or not the celebration will offend the French or the Spanish... Now I'm not exactly jingoistic but it is a celebration of a naval battle which resulted in our victory over those two countries, who were at the time threatening invasion of Britain. I mean fair enough, we don't want to be marching around burning French and Spanish flags or the like but when you promise a naval re-enactment, don't re-enact the post war storm at sea, celebrate the actual battle. We will happily celebrate and re-enact Dunkirk, which was a retreat and little else (albeit a magnificent acheivement) and yet we shy from celebrating perhaps the most important victory in our nation's history? This is just yet another example of stupid political correctness, even the French were more realistic acknowledging that is was in fact a celebration of a French defeat. Perhaps the real motivation behind it all was more of Uncle Tony's posturing and maneuvering as he continues to his goal of European Presidency?
